Bisacodyl 5mg tablet

Compared to Dulcolax 5 mg tablet

How the medication works:

Bisacodyl works by stimulating intestinal nerves to contract the colon to initiate bowel movements. This product generally produces bowel movement in 6 to 12 hours
 

Indication/Instructions: 
Constipation

 

Adults and Children > 12 years:

Take 1-3 tablets by mouth with water as a single daily dose to relief occasional constipations
 

Children 6 to 12 years of age:

Take 1 tablet by mouth with water as a single daily dose to relief occasional constipations

 

Adverse effects:

  • Abdominal discomfort 

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain may occur

 

Exclusion to self care:

  • Other symptoms of nausea and vomiting

  • Sudden bowel movement changes > 2 weeks 

  • Severe abdominal pain 

 

Do not use:

  • If patient can not swallow

  • If patient had antacid/milk during last 1 hour 

 

Stop use and ask your doctor if: 

  • Patient experiences the symptoms  > 1 week 

  • Patient experiences rectal bleeding

  • Patient does not have successful bowel movement after usage of the product

 

Drug Interaction: 

  • Polyethylene Glycol  Increased risk of large intestine damage and inflammation

  • Aluminium, calcium or magnesium containing product  Decreased effectiveness of the bisacodyl product 

  • Milk Increases the stomach irritation

 

Special Instructions:

Take it with water. Maximum usage for 7 days. Separate antacid/milk by 1 hour. If the patient experiences rectal bleeding or patient does not have a bowel movement, talk to your doctor.
